Serious neglect!

Hey all! I feel like every time I update, I apologize for the lack of posting, but I truly am sorry! School is slowly but surely eating up every hour of my day, and although I love it, it leaves absolutely no time to blog about my living in NYC! I’m going to have to go back a month or so and hit the main points on what’s been happening. So here we go:

About a month ago, I got an exciting interview for an internship. And luckily, I got it! I’m now interning at Vanity Fair Magazine in the photo department. It’s already been a great experience and I’m working with some really great people. I obviously don’t have photos of anything, because my days spent there are doing photo research, helping organize the spreads for future issues, etc. I’ve had a few exciting projects I’ve helped on, including going through original prints of JFK’s inauguration- beautiful photos. Photos of him giving his speeches, the pre-ceremony parties, Frank Sinatra performing, and even JFK himself in that car moments before his assassination. Spending a mere month at the mag has definitely given me insight into how things are run and organized.

So now, every day of the week is spent going to school or interning. Any free time is devoted to doing homework and shooting new projects. My final project for one of my classes is based upon “Subway Culture”. I’ve only shot 3 rolls so far, but I’ve printed a few photos in the darkroom already and I’m really liking how they came out. Hopefully as a series it will read as a cohesive batch of photos. When I’m done with the project, I plan on scanning them to show to you all.

As far as personal shooting, I recently shot a band from Poughkeepsie called The Here and Now. We shot at Riverside Park, a nearby spot that is just so beautiful- it overlooks the Hudson, and with the foliage, it was just the perfect scenery. Here are some of the results:

I’m currently in the process of planning a shoot for mid-december that I think will turn out really nicely. I have yet to legitimately shoot fashion/beauty work since living here and figured I had to before I left. I’m really excited to be shooting stuff that really appeals to my taste.

But anyways, most of the photos I’ve taken recently have been for school projects, but I do have some random photos since posting last. I guess I’ll post them here just to give a gist of what I’ve been up to in recent weeks. After I return from Thanksgiving break, I plan on going to the Museum of Natural History. I’ve been dying to go and haven’t had much time- but I made a promise to myself that I will go before I leave for Christmas break. Here are the photos:

All these photos were taken in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Some more random ones.

Anyways, hopefully I will post again soon. I really have been wanting to do a video, but we’ll see if I have time for that.

Until next time,

-K

Catch Up Time!

I know I know, we are really bad at this!

Life has been rolling and things have been happening. I guess the biggest thing that happened lately was my birthday. Kait, a bunch of friends, and I pulled a weekend celebration. We went to Vynl, a gay bar that has become my regular bar now, 1Oak, Angels and Kings and a few other places. Here are some pictures from it.

Another big thing that has happened for me recently, has been working with Q Models. (www.qmodels.com) I’m finally shooting real models! Here’s some of my favorite images from my first shoot:

Julian is a model from England and he’s been in New York for about a few weeks now. He’s a doll and we are hopping to work together again soon.

I also shot with Randall from Boss Models this past weekend. This shoot was a lot of fun. I’m still in the process of editing these however, here are some images:

Randall is wonderful and I can’t wait to finish editing these.

I’m not sure if I included the rest of the images from my internship with Herring & Herring’s past shoot, so I’ll toss some in here. Jesper has been in Europe for the past month so nothing new has been done with them. However, I’ve been warned that November is slammed with shoots, so expect more soon.

Anyways! There is an update to the important things that have been going on in my life.

It’s Halloween today and it’s supposed to be a big thing here in the city. I’m making Kait come out even though we both have to be up super early for work/school tomorrow morning and I’ll make sure we post a picture of everyone in their costumes tonight.

Happy Halloween kids!

This weekend was great! I only documented what I did on Saturday, so I’ll just show you those photos. So yeah, on Saturday, I went to The Met (http://www.metmuseum.org/), located on 5th avenue and 82nd street. It’s one of the bigger museums in the city and has so much to offer. They have art from pretty much every period you can think of, from anywhere in the world.

Here are the photos I took of various artworks within the museum.

The above photo on the right matches the description below. I thought it was interesting. You can see the top portion of the head that has an opening.

By no means do I know all of the artists of every piece. But I really enjoyed just walking around looking at everything. I was there for about two hours and barely made a dent into the place. I didn’t even see 18th and 19th century paintings until today when I went again. I didn’t have my camera, unfortunately! But anyways, it’s a really great museum. It’s often crowded, but it’s worth it, I think. If you’re into art, definitely make a stop into there.

The next museum on my list is The Museum of Natural History. I’ll definitely be taking photos then, as well! Can’t wait!

Until next time,

9/23-9/26

Hey guys! So this weekend my best friend, Christy, came up from Florida to visit me in the big city. We had a great time just hanging out, eating delicious food, and seeing wonderful live music from a personal favorite band of ours, Stars. We started off Friday night with seeing Stars at Terminal 5 (www.terminal5nyc.com), which is literally a 5 minute walk from where I live. The venue was a lotttttt bigger than I expected. We had a great time!

The show ran pretty late and we were actually really tired, so we just went back home and hung out. On Saturday, we woke up at a decent hour and headed over to Williamsburg to eat and go thrifting. We went to a flea market located just off the Bedford stop called Artists & Fleas (http://www.artistsandfleas.com). I wish I had taken pictures of the inside because it was so wonderful! They had loads and loads of handmade jewelry and vintage clothing. I really was interested in finding some good jewelry- and I found exactly that when I went into Brooklyn Charm (http://brooklyncharmshop.com/). This store was AMAZING. Basically, you can design your own charm bracelet, necklace, earrings, rings, and any kind of jewelry you could possibly think of. I just got a pretty basic necklace, but you can choose from literally a thousand different charms.

Later that night, we went to a restaurant/dessert place called Max Brenner. This is easily one of my favorite spots in NYC. The dessert is always fantastic.

Anyways, I have a few random photos I’ll post that I’ve been taking from around FIT and the city. After this, it’s back to studying!

Well, that’s it for tonight. I’ve got to study 13th century art.

Until next time,

-K

I’ve been slacking as well

Sorry guys! Life has been going and the world has been turning. It’s been a very interesting month and a half since I’ve been here. I’ve been assisting on shoots, going out with co-workers, spending money! ahhhhh. It’s been wonderful. I’m very happy up here. I do miss school a little bit though, especially watching Kait have fun out photographing!

Well I figured I’d just put some images so you know what’s been happening, so here is some from behind the scenes of the shoots I assisted with the boys, Jesper and Dimitri from Herring and Herring. (www.herringandherring.com)

Well I’ve got a crap ton of editing still left to do, but I figured I’d let you all see what I’ve been up to lately. More pictures to come!

I kept my promise!

I’m posting! I brought my camera around with me today because I was visiting a really interesting place. For school, I had to go to a prop house called Props for Today. Basically, what it is, is a place that is FULL of everything you can possibly think of. All the props in the house are typically using for styling of some sort, whether it’s for set designs, movies, magazine editorials, etc. From vintage to new, from big to small, they have it all. Apparently, SNL is their biggest client and uses Props for Today for basically every show. All the items can be rented on a weekly basis or bought. But when I say that they literally have everything, I mean it. I was particularly interested in all the unique vintage items they had. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Props for Today is located on W. 34th street between 8th and 9th, on the 12th floor of building 330. If you’re ever in need of something obscure, definitely check out this place. I guarantee they will have it, if not, something similar.

Anyways, after going there, I was starving and made my way back uptown on the 1 train to 66th. I grabbed a wrap and salad and sat down between Broadway and Columbus in this cute, little seating area they have. Here are some random photos.

Oh yes, this cookie was amazing.

And below is a quick snap of some prints I have pinned on my wall. Kind of a weird formation, I know, but it’s nice to have in my room.

Anyways, that’s about all I have to offer today. More photos coming during this week, for sure.

Until next time,

-K

I feel horrible.

I really have been meaning to post on here. I’m neglecting the blog so badly! I think now though, I will REALLY keep up with my promise to post often. I just think I needed a few weeks to get settled with school and whatnot. School has been amazing. It’s so refreshing to actually go to a school with alike people, who are interested and passionate about the same things I am. It’s really, truly great. I never have minded school, but I actually look forward to my 6 hour photo class! I missed the darkroom!

But anyhow, because my life has been taken over by school, I haven’t done much outside of that. I have had a few photo assignments that involve me taking photos around the city. Unfortunately, they are film and I did not get a CD along with the prints. I think I might just have to get a scanner, because I really like how they came out.

The place I went to get them printed at, Sunshine Color Labs, does fantastic work. If you’re living in the city and want to get some film processed, I highly recommend checking them out. They’re located on 31st street between 6th and 7th. I have yet to get anything bigger than 4x6 prints, but I’m sure the quality of larger size prints is great.

Anyways, here a few a photos to tie you over until I take some more. Be patient! More posts coming soon, I promise!

Until next time,

-K

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted anything. This past week was the first week of FIT classes. So hectic! I have so much homework… I don’t even know what to do with myself. But anyways, I thought I owed a new post to the blog. I’ve been taking random photos the past week so I thought I’d just show you what I’ve been shooting. Nothing special, but still fun and an insight into what I’ve been doing.

So this pretty much sums up the last few days. My roommate, Alex, got here on the Sunday night before school started. I love having her here!

Anyways, this past Sunday, we went to brunch at Whym, a restaurant in the Upper West Side. The food is AMAZING. But what’s even more amazing is the drinks that Anthony, the bartender, served up. He is a chef when it comes to alcohol- absolutely brilliant. Here are a few of the drinks he served:

These last two drinks were easily the best of the morning. The first was a caramel salted martini. SO delicious. The second was a pear cobbler martini. I can’t even begin to describe how good it was. It literally tasted like a pear pie. YUM.

I highly suggest visiting Whym. It has a great atmosphere and the employees are really awesome!

Anyways, I believe it’s bed time.

Until next time,

-K

I think we owe you guys a post:

Today is September 6th 2010. It’s been a while since either of us has posted. I feel like we owe you all something. Nothing super exciting has happened to me lately. I’ve been to quite a few restaurants that I’d like to share with you all, and I’ve been at work. No exploring, and no adventures.

Mario and I went to Central Park the other day and relaxed a bit. It’s wonderful there.

I wanted to tell you all about this vegan pan-asian restaurant I went to with a friend of mine a week or so ago. It’s called Wild Ginger. It was incredible cute inside and the food was pretty cheap. For being completely protein and soy, it was quite tasty. I’ve learned that I really enjoy the taste of vegetarian and vegan foods, however I don’t think I have the will power to sit there and go completely to that lifestyle.

Pictures to come later.

I’m going to go hang out on the fire escape in this beautiful weather!
